Tip: Dawn & Dusk is especially spectacular!
Bundjalung people have respectfully known the mountain as
Wollumbin
for an incredibly long time. The name is said to mean 'fighting
king of the mountains' or possibly 'cloud
catcher'.
In 1770, the explorer Captain Cook named it 'Mount
Warning' as he sailed down the coast, having just narrowly
avoided a submerged reef.
Standing over one thousand
metres
high, it apparently comprises a 22 million year old volcanic
plug, and the outside walls of the caldera are what remain of its
once awesomely majestic slopes
according to geologists.
Recently 'World Heritage' listed
by UNESCO and surrounded by National Parks, the mountain's tip
remains
the first place in Australia to receive the brilliant rays of the
morning sun.
